The Pakistan Cricket Board is preparing to take legal action against Blessing Muzarabani after the Zimbabwe pacer pulled out of his Islamabad United deal to join the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2026.

What happened

Muzarabani, 29, had signed with Islamabad United as a replacement for West Indies quick Shamar Joseph on a reported PKR 11 million contract for PSL 2026. But after KKR needed a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, who was released by the BCCI over political tensions between India and Bangladesh, Muzarabani chose the IPL instead.

The Zimbabwean quick is expected to arrive in Kolkata on March 17, with the IPL season opening on March 28. PSL 2026 begins just two days earlier on March 26, making the scheduling clash impossible to navigate.

PCB response

The PCB has confirmed it will pursue legal action over the breach of contract. This is not the first time the board has taken a hard line on players choosing the IPL over the PSL. South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch received a one-year PSL ban and a financial penalty in April 2025 after leaving his Peshawar Zalmi contract to join Mumbai Indians as an injury replacement.

The pattern is becoming familiar. The IPL and PSL schedules overlap for the second consecutive year, and the financial gap between the two leagues continues to push overseas players toward India when both options land at the same time.

Muzarabani's T20 World Cup form

The move comes off the back of a superb T20 World Cup 2026 for Muzarabani, where he took 13 wickets for Zimbabwe across the tournament. That tally placed him just one behind joint-leading wicket-takers Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy, who finished with 14 each. His performance earned him a place in the ICC's Team of the Tournament.

KKR are also dealing with pace bowling problems elsewhere. Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the entire IPL season with a knee injury, while Matheesha Pathirana faces fitness concerns of his own. Muzarabani's arrival will go some way toward filling those gaps.

A growing tension

The IPL-PSL overlap has created a tug-of-war that the PCB keeps losing. While some veterans like Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, and Glenn Maxwell have opted for the PSL when IPL opportunities dried up, in-demand players in their prime almost always choose India when forced to pick.

Whether the PCB's legal action leads to meaningful consequences for Muzarabani or simply adds to a growing list of disputes remains to be seen. For now, KKR have their man, and Islamabad United are left searching for another overseas quick with the season less than two weeks away.
