Valverde blitzes Manchester City with first-half hat-trick as Real Madrid seize Champions League control

Valverde fires Real Madrid ahead on the counter
Real Madrid were clinical from the start. In the 20th minute, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball forward and Valverde seized on it, running clear before rounding Gianluigi Donnarumma to slot home the opener.
Seven minutes later, the Uruguayan doubled the lead. Vinicius Junior picked him out on the edge of the area and Valverde fired a low left-footed shot past Donnarumma, giving the Italian no chance.
Hat-trick complete before the break
The 27-year-old completed his treble three minutes before the interval. Brahim Diaz played a clever chip over the City defence, and Valverde controlled, knocked the ball over Marc Guehi, then volleyed past Donnarumma. The Bernabeu erupted.
City had no response. Pep Guardiola's side created almost nothing all night and looked a shadow of the team that dominated European football just a few years ago. The second half was a dead rubber, with Real Madrid content to manage the game and City unable to muster any meaningful pressure.
What this means for the tie
Real Madrid hold a commanding 3-0 lead going into the return leg in Manchester. City will need to score at least four without reply at the Etihad to progress, and on this evidence that looks close to impossible.
For Valverde, this was a career-defining European night. Often described as a box-to-box midfielder who does his best work without the ball, his finishing on Wednesday was that of a striker in peak form. Three different types of goal, too: a composed round-the-keeper finish, a drilled left-footer, and an audacious volley. Not many players manage that in an entire Champions League campaign, let alone one half.
