Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, according to reports from the Mirror and Football Transfers, with scouts from the Spanish club attending a recent Newcastle match to run the rule over the Italy international.

Arsenal were already understood to be interested in the 25-year-old midfielder, but Real Madrid's involvement significantly raises the stakes for Newcastle, who are expected to demand a fee north of £100 million.

Long contract but growing speculation

Tonali signed a five-year deal when he joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 and agreed an extension in October 2025 that ties him to the club until 2029, with an option for a further year. On paper, Newcastle hold all the cards.

The picture is more complicated than the contract suggests, though. There is growing speculation that Newcastle could consider selling a key player this summer if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. Financial Fair Play regulations are reportedly influencing the club's planning, and a bid well above £100 million from either Real Madrid or Arsenal could test their resolve.

Tonali himself has publicly expressed happiness at St James' Park and hinted at wanting to take on a greater leadership role next season. His agent said the player's true market value would become clearer during March.

United also in the picture

Manchester United have been linked with Tonali in recent weeks too, though their summer priorities appear to lie elsewhere. Reports from the Manchester Evening News suggest United have identified Bournemouth attacker Marcus Tavernier as a target, with a deal worth around £40 million being explored. The 26-year-old has five Premier League goals and four assists in 26 appearances this season.

For now, Newcastle's strong negotiating position means they can afford to wait. But if one of Europe's biggest clubs puts serious money on the table, the conversation could shift quickly.
