New Zealand have never lost to India at a T20 World Cup and Sunday's final could make it four

India have beaten New Zealand 18 times in T20 internationals. But in T20 World Cups, the Black Caps hold a perfect 3-0 record against the defending champions heading into Sunday's final in Ahmedabad.

When India walk out at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday for the T20 World Cup final, they will face a side that has had their number on this stage every single time.

New Zealand have played India three times in T20 World Cup history. They have won all three.

Johannesburg, 2007

The first meeting came during the inaugural tournament in South Africa. New Zealand posted 190 all out, powered by Brendon McCullum's 45 off 31 balls and Craig McMillan's 44 off 23. India had Virender Sehwag (40 off 17 balls) and Gautam Gambhir (51) firing at the top, but Daniel Vettori's 4-20 strangled the middle order. India fell 10 runs short.

It barely mattered in the end. India went on to win that tournament, beating Pakistan in a tense final. But the loss to New Zealand was an early warning.

Nagpur, 2016

This one still stings for Indian fans. Playing at home in a tournament they were expected to dominate, the hosts ran into Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi on a turning Nagpur pitch. New Zealand managed only 126-7, and it looked like India would cruise to victory. They didn't.

Santner took 4 wickets. Sodhi took 3. India were bowled out for 79, their lowest T20 World Cup total. A 47-run defeat in front of a stunned home crowd.

The same Santner now captains New Zealand into Sunday's final. He knows exactly how to hurt India on this stage.

Dubai, 2021

The most recent World Cup meeting came during a difficult campaign for India under Virat Kohli. Trent Boult ripped through the top order with 3-20, and India limped to 110-7. Daryl Mitchell smashed 49 not out and Kane Williamson added an unbeaten 33 as New Zealand chased the target in just 14.3 overs. An eight-wicket hammering.

India failed to reach the semi-finals in that tournament. New Zealand went all the way to the final before losing to Australia.

Different teams, same outcome

The strangest thing about this record is how different the three Indian sides were. Different captains, different eras, different conditions in South Africa, India, and the UAE. And yet New Zealand found a way each time.

The overall T20I head-to-head paints a completely different picture. India lead 18-11 across 30 matches. They won the bilateral series between the two sides 4-1 just weeks before this World Cup started. On most days, India are the stronger T20 side by some distance.

But T20 World Cups bring something different out of New Zealand when they face India. Call it big-game composure, coincidence, or something harder to explain. The pattern is there.

Can India break the record on Sunday?

India go into the final as heavy favourites. They are the defending champions after beating South Africa in Barbados in 2024, and they are playing on home soil in front of a crowd that will be firmly behind them. Sanju Samson is in the form of his life after his 89 off 42 balls in the semi-final against England. Jasprit Bumrah remains the best T20 bowler in the world.

New Zealand, meanwhile, rode Finn Allen's 33-ball century to demolish South Africa in their semi-final. Allen's hundred was the fastest in T20 World Cup history, and it sent a message: this New Zealand side can blow anyone away on their day.

The first ball at Ahmedabad on Sunday will not just be the start of a World Cup final. For India, it will be the start of their latest attempt to beat the one team that has always beaten them when it matters most in this tournament.
